What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator commonly used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. It is a non-invasive injectable that prevents the contracting of facial muscles which cause wrinkles and fine lines. By relaxing the facial muscles, the appearance of wrinkles, creases and fine lines are erased or significantly reduced, providing a younger and refreshed appearance.

How does Botox work?

Botox is injected by units with a very fine needle. The sensation feels like a tiny poke or a prick. The number of units required varies by individual, depending on the muscle that is being treated and how strong that muscle is. Men usually require more units than women because of their musculature.

Botox treatments take 10-20 minutes and no downtime is needed. Every appointment at Luminosity Studios medical spa in Guelph begins with our experienced Nurse Injector discussing the desired effects you want to achieve with your treatment. Botox results are most noticeable after 7-10 days, but can take up to 2 weeks to show. On average Botox results last about 3 months. Over time the neuromodulator wears off and the muscles return to regular activity.

What is Botox used for?

People use Botox for cosmetic and medical purposes.

  • Cosmetic Botox is mostly used to eliminate or reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. People use Botox to smooth the lines in their forehead, around the mouth (laugh and smile lines), above the lip (smoker lines), nose (bunny lines) and around the eyes (crows feet). Other common Botox treatments include lip flip to achieve a fuller upper lip, and gummy smile for those who show more gum than they would like when they smile. More people are starting preventative Botox at younger ages to delay the onset of lines and wrinkles.
  • Medical Botox is used to provide pain relief from chronic migraine headaches and for TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain from clenching and grinding). Botox injections can also be used under the arms to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Some insurance companies provide coverage for medical Botox treatments.
